Definitely not for everyone as it might be quite difficult to read due to historical terminology.
This book is for history lovers! Jun 01, Lee Manning rated it liked it. This was recommended to me while touring the castle at Eger, in Hungary. It is a fictionalized history of the attempt by the invading Turks to capture this fortress and the town it protected. The heroism of the defenders of Eger is legendary in Hungary, as about 2, of them held out agains a seige by a superior Turkish Army of over 20, for 39 days, at the end of which the Turks withdrew, their only defeat in their decades-long invasion of Hungary in that century.
The writing is not the This was recommended to me while touring the castle at Eger, in Hungary. The writing is not the best, at times disjointed, and in broken chronological order with poor transitions, and it was, in fact, written as a series of related pieces and assembled into a book at the end.
The author is overly involved with physical descriptions of the combatants, down to their clothing choices, but all-in-all, I enjoyed it. We had been informed of some of the key events and strategies of the siege as we toured the castle and its underground catacomb, and I enjoyed the book confirming and embellishing this history. Accompanying this reading with a full glass of Bull's Blood Wine Egri Bikaver would be an excellent idea. Aug 04, Mary Etta rated it really liked it. I really enjoyed reading this classic Hungarian historical fiction of the siege of Eger Castle, Hungary.
My grandson is currently living in Eger in his LDS missionary service and I wanted to learn more of the heritage of the Hungarian people. The main characters of the book are well developed following them from childhood to the Turkish assault. I appreciate knowing a bit of Hungarian history in this way. Amazingly resourceful warriors dedicated to the survival of Hungary. I thought of news I really enjoyed reading this classic Hungarian historical fiction of the siege of Eger Castle, Hungary.
I thought of news reports of the heroic efforts of the Hungarian revolt in Budapest of in my teen years. The only copy of "Eclipse of the Crescent Moon" available where I live is owned by the university library. I loved the Norwegian classic, "Kristin Lavransdatter" which gave me a feel for Norwegian heritage.
Now looking forward to the Thai classic, "A Child of the Northeast", the most difficult to identify and find. Online used bookstores are great! Jul 24, Rob rated it really liked it Shelves: favorites , hungary , historical-fiction , medieval.
Incredible graphic detail of the seige of Eger. After having visited Eger on several occasions and toured the castle remains, this novel gave me a great appreciation for the brave Hungarians who have defended the city.
Geza Gardonyi tells a good story leading up to the battle - he follows the plight of one soldier from his youth while inter-weaving several other characters. A childhood sweetheart, gypsy, adopted father, army commander, and enemy Turk all repeatedly cross paths. At first thin Incredible graphic detail of the seige of Eger. At first things seem a bit too coincidental, but after several chapters you will look forward to the "run-ins.
This a must read for anybody interested in the medieval era or castles and fortresses. Love this book in Hungarian.
My father read it to us aloud. Books were it, and we were enthralled, played parts from it, even started a tunnel. I read it to my children when they were quite young, it left quite an impression on my son.
We were even able to see the ruins of it one day. The story has not lost its magic over time. I listen to it on audio now to keep the language alive.
It is as heart braking today as it ever was. Mar 09, Prenex rated it it was amazing. I think the book is great but I miss the Hungarian title's meaning on the english cover.
I like "Egri Csillagok" much more than "Eclipse of the Crescent Moon" as the battle is more about the "Stars of Eger" - which the Hungarian title means.
Other than these I enjoyed the book a lot and of course read it in Hungarian ;- I think the book is great but I miss the Hungarian title's meaning on the english cover. Other than these I enjoyed the book a lot and of course read it in Hungarian ; I red this book in Macedonian and it is a great book. I'm a big fan of the books based on the real historical events.
Some parts could have been a bit shorter. However, all the characters are well written and very real. View 1 comment.

This is on the Books list simply because it is a Hungarian classic chronicling the successful defence of Eger Castle from the Ottoman Turks by a vastly outnumbered army.

Anyone coming here looking for historical accuracy is going to have to find another book to reference in order to sort the fact from the fiction. The novel was written by a Hungarian, for Hungarians, about Hungary. Gardonyi is a national treasure and the siege of Eger a source of national pride that cannot be underestimated. For that reason alone, the novel is important. Gardonyi takes artistic license liberally to ensure that every Hungarian is a hero and every Turk a villain.
This is so true to type that the Disney version has every villainous Turk speaking with a British accent. There is a naivety about the descriptions of people and places, how everyone and every action is so clearly either good or evil, how melodrama suffuses everything, and how, despite apparently insuperable odds, everything turns out fine in the end.
What did I think? I think it's a book for 12 year olds. The subject is good, the storyline is good. The execution is sanitary and for juveniles. Simply put, I can't finish it. I am more than half way through and cannot imagine spending any more precious time on it. The characters, their dialogue and conduct is
