In this town, creatures known as shibito roam the streets, feeding on the living. The story is presented non-linearly and follows ten survivors of a supernatural disaster.
This unique approach to storytelling has its pros and cons, with the non-linearity making it difficult to get attached to any particular character. However, the episodic structure can be seen as levels in a traditional game, making it easier to approach this game as a more traditional gaming experience.
However, one thing to note is that the game, for some reason, is overly cryptic. Some puzzles make absolutely no sense, forcing players to go through lots of frustrating trial and error to finally get right. In Forbidden Siren, stealth is your best friend. Luckily, there are lots of ways to slip past the monsters, including distractions and ranged weapons. The feeling of dread and tension as you evade the shibito is amazing, truly capturing the essence of some classic Japanese horror films.
The ship its self is capsized and all the passengers fall in the water. At the same time an army helicopter for the Japanese Defense Forces faces problems and has to make a crash landing on an island. The story tells of how the survivors of both accidents attempt to survive the horrors of the island.
For reasons unknown, the marooned characters develop an ability to see through the eyes sightjack of the possessed humans on the island. This ability is used to plot escape plans and routes to avoid the possessed. This ability is used frequently during the game as weapons are often unwieldy and ineffective against the monsters who also have the ability to regenerate themselves after being felled.
Items found in the game are often added to a personal archive with which you can build a theory as to what is happening on the island as the game itself is purposefully cryptic about such details. In your archive you can find video, audio and text files and even a portable video-game that relate to the history of the characters and even the enemies. A bonus level is granted for finding 99 of the archive items and a third ending is awarded for beating it.
However, using this power leaves you exposed to any possible threats, so use it with caution. The story in Forbidden Siren 2 presents itself in a non-linear fashion. However, much of the backstory of Yamijima Island can be found only by collecting random items.
For fans of rich backstories and cryptic mysteries, this is great; that said, if you were expecting an engaging and clear plot, you might be in for some disappointment. The creepy enemies and gloomy environments we saw in the first game are also present in the sequel. Much of the unique charm of the Siren series is here, and its peculiar approach to storytelling might be something that appeals to Japanese survival horror fans. Thanks to some modifications to the difficulty and the puzzle design, Forbidden Siren 2 improves over its predecessor in almost every way.
That said, the locations are not as spooky as they were in the prequel, but that can be forgiven thanks to the outstandingly creepy character design and revamped combat mechanics.
